Saint Pio and I
In the rugged hills of Southern Italy lies the small town of Pietrelcina, where a humble boy was born — destined to become the legendary Padre Pio, now known to the world as Saint Pio. He entered the monastery in nearby Morcone, the same town my family hails from. As a young friar, he walked those quiet stone streets — streets my father knew well because he knew Padre Pio back then before the world called him a saint.
Later, Padre Pio was stationed in San Giovanni Rotondo, where pilgrims from across the globe would one day gather in reverence. When I was nine years old, my parents took me to Italy. We made the pilgrimage to San Giovanni, not as tourists, but as a family honoring our connection rooted in faith and history.
At dawn, we sat in the pews for Padre Pio’s mass. My father, carrying his 8mm movie camera, captured something extraordinary: Padre Pio’s benediction — on film, with permission.
This is more than just a memory. This is the story of Padre Pio and I.
